The Strengthening Loss and Damage response capacity in the Global South (STRENGTH) project is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and is being led by the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) in collaboration with the Institute for Study and Development Worldwide (IFSD). The project was developed recognizing the need to better understand and address the knowledge and capacity gaps for better Loss and Damage (L&D) policy and implementation mechanisms for the most vulnerable countries in the Global South through extensive research and capacity-building activities.
ICCCAD and IFSD have both undertaken substantive research and policy advising work on climate adaptation and inclusive response. ICCCAD has concretized the Loss and Damage Programme, focusing on different facets of work like research, UNFCCC negotiations, and capacity building. IFSD has conducted research on climate risks and L&D with a focus on South Asia, South Pacific, and, to a lesser extent, Africa, and hence the two partners bring complementary strengths on policy advocacy (ICCCAD) and research (IFSD) to formulate this project.
This three-year project was officially launched on 9th November in Sharm El-Sheik, Egypt, during the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27). The session brought together a high-level panel of policymakers and government officials from the four main country partners (Bangladesh, Rwanda, Nepal, and Vanuatu) to discuss the project, their country’s perspectives, and the way forward. This helped pave a pathway for increased cooperation among the governments of the most vulnerable and least developed countries and developed countries.
